2006 EGA High School Art Contest

Elk Grove Artists President Michael Gill had a dream last year: instead of giving monetary scholarships to only a couple of high school seniors why not give all high schools in the Elk Grove area an opportunity to win ribbons (and $$$) in a citywide art competition?  So Gill carefully broached the subject with the EGA membership, got the backing of some EGA power players like Cheryl Griess, Dee Tschida and Dick Beymer, then proceeded to make inroads with the City of Elk Grove and Western Festival management.  Grants were received from the City of Elk Grove, Sacramento Metropolitan Arts Commission and financial and inkind support from the Western Festival and private donations.  Contest application forms developed, marketing for the show conducted, and high schools contacted to participate.  Wholesale Art and Framing gave the EGA a great deal on black wooden frames, glass inserts, and uncut mats.

EGA members were asked to help staff a Framing Workshop on March 18th to show all contest entrants how to properly mat and frame their two-dimensional pieces of artwork.  All day long, at the Lakeside Community Center, dozens of students brought their art entries to each "station" of the workshop:  check-in, mat measuring, mat cutting, glass inserting, framing, and check-out.  Pat Deese, an EGA member, took pictures of all the artworks and compiled them - along with pictures of the Superintendent's art contest winners - into a lovely color brochure commemorating the event.  Click on the thumbnail picture at left to view the pictures in detail.

Students from Sheldon High School expressed their appreciation for all they had learned about the process of professionally readying art for show. Click on the thumbnail picture at right to view the notes of thanks in detail.

At the Pavilians building in Elk Grove Park, during the May 6-7th Western Festival, all two- and three-dimensional works were assembled for display by several EGA members.  Click on the pictures below to see a large image of the art.

Many thanks to Dick Beymer, Judging Chairperson, and to judges Patricia Wall and Patty Felkner from Cosumnes River College, and to Kanika Marshall, EGA member, for carefully considering which seven works should win First Place awards and which represented the Best of Show.  Thanks to the EGA members who curated both days of the show, presided over the awards presentation, and cleaned everything up on Sunday afternoon.  The contest winners are as follows:

Best in Show - Candiss Koenitzer, "Knitting a Snake"
1st in Works on Canvas - Karen Asuro, "Skulls and Flowers"
1st in Works on Paper - Buddy Mavy, "Abandoned Vehicle"
1st in Mixed Media - Kara Kreissig, "Spotlight"
1st in Photography - Mollyrose Corr, "River Rocks"
1st in Enhanced Photography - Katie Hall, "Untitled"
1st in Digital Art - Bruce Mai, "Identity Theft"
1st in Sculpture - Peter Mallare, "Alexander Graham Teapot"

And congratulations to Alison Flory, from Elk Grove High
School, who was the 2006 EGA scholarship award winner.

This was a HUGE undertaking for the EGA (especially for
EGA President Gill and Art Contest Director Griess) and
we heard numerous positive comments about the quality of the artwork from student participants and Western Festival revelers alike.  There was full coverage in the Elk Grove Citizen and Sacramento Bee newspapers.
